The Haries

Welcome to the website of the finest running club in Scottish academia: Edinburgh University Hare and Hounds, affectionately known as the Haries!

Established in 1890, we are the University’s cross country, hill, road and long-distance running club. We like to think of it as a place where runners of any and all abilities can meet up, run, and socialise together.

We also have close links to the Athletics and Orienteering clubs.

Whether you run regularly, are an international athlete, or just like to go for the odd jog, finding the motivation to run is often much easier if you do it with others. We want you to run with us, and have a good time doing it. That way, you’re more likely to stick with it. The banter at training and races is great, and the socials afterwards are better still. For proof, have a look at what we’ve been up to recently on our Facebook group. You can also join our mailing list to receive formative yet entertaining updates on Harie life.

We encourage friendly competition (especially with rival Unis), and think all our members should try racing – the buzz of your fellow Haries cheering you on just can’t be beaten, no matter your ability. Obviously, we like to (and often do) win, but it’s much more important to get people running. Over the past few years, the Haries have had some excellent athletes and some cracking results – a trend we want to continue. We have been Scottish Universities Cross Country Champions every year since the overall competition began, and we hope to continue, and improve, our great results in 2020/21.

In 2020 we hosted the BUCS Cross Country event, welcoming 2000 runners from all over the UK to Holyrood Park. We put on an amazing event and social showing the other clubs how its done – you don’t want to miss out on the events we’ll organise this year!
