The Braid Hills Cross Country Races are held annually by Edinburgh University Hare & Hounds, on a course situated between King's Buildings and the Pentlands. This year's race was on Saturday 11th November. Results.
The Women's Race is one lap (approximately 3 miles), the Men's Race 2 laps (6 miles). The course is undulating and often wet, with one steep downhill on each lap. Racing studs are recommended, given that much of the course runs over a gravel bridlepath. The races are challenging and popular with both local club runners and Universities from around the British Isles.
Entry costs £6 (£8 unaffiliated), and may be on the day of the race. Alternatively, entry forms can be downloaded here and returned by post to the address on the form with the entry fee(s), or you can enter online via Runners World or Sports Fitness (search for Braids as the event name).
Registration will be in KB House, at King's Buildings (West Mains Road), from 12:00pm until 1:40pm. Click here for a map of the KB campus - KB House is circled on it.
Changing and showering facilities are available in KB House, where there is also a bar that serves food and drink.
Start times are 2:00pm for the women's race and 2:30pm for the men's. Click here for directions from KB House to the start line. It takes about 15 minutes to get from one to the other.
Results will be announced and presentations made in KB House, as soon as possible after the races. A range of prizes, thanks to our generous sponsors Run and Become will be awarded to teams and individuals, and will include Run and Become vouchers and numerous varieties of alcohol.
The results will also be made available on this website as soon as those responsible for them have recovered from side-effects of the Braids Ceilidh (see below).
Past results: 2006; 2005; 2004; 2003; 2002.
The fun begins with a three course meal in the newly refurbished Teviot Dining Hall. Menu. The cost of the meal is £10 -- a real bargain by anyone's standards. The consumption of alcoholic beverages is permitted before, during and after the meal. There is bound to be plenty of banter with the other universities.
Afterwards, the real night begins: we are all heading over to Cafe Royale for some post-prandial dancing. The Ceilidh really is the highlight of the evening. It offers a unique experience for all the visiting universities, and it is what keeps them coming back year after year. The cost is £4.
The band will finish playing at around about 12.30. Post ceilidh, you are strongly recommend to head home, via a cheesy nightclub, for some more dancing, drinking and general banter. It really is cracking line up, for what is undoubtedly the biggest and best social event of the year.
Basic overnight accommodation in a Edinburgh student's flat can be provided for visiting University teams if they contact EUH&H in good time prior to the race. Teams wishing to do so, should contact Rosie or Ben.
