On 2nd of February - yes the morning after the "sporting event of the year"(!), 24 Haries left Edinburgh at 10am to embark on a weekend of fantastic running, incredible socialising, and general domination of British University Cross Country Championships in Bath.
Despite the majority of the coach feeling slightly less than 100% due to the previous very late night, we managed to get to Bath and set out to find some serious carbs! Feeling refreshed on Saturday our coach took us to the course where we eyed up the competition, and the 'gradual climb' we were about to face! We entered teams for both the Men's A (11.28km) and B races (7.64km), and 8 girls for their race (6.81km), and under pretty perfect weather conditions, everyone ran spectacularly.
As with every race however, there were some performances that definitely need a specific mention. Gwyn Bellamy came an amazing 20th, first year Dougie Selman not far behind in 38th, and Duncan Coombs in 69th out of huge field of 235 - certainly justifying our brilliant overall 11th position in the Men's A race (and as expected, a huge 9 places ahead of the next Scottish Uni, Aberdeen!). This was followed by further brilliance shown by Hannah Edwards, Vicky Clegg and Rachel Frew, bringing the girls team home in 17th place - though all 8 runners ran impressively considering the severe lack of sleep over the previous few days! The Men's B race (or the 'rabble'as referred to by the race organiser!) yet again showed the strength of the Haries, with Matthew Donnery and Huw Jones coming 72nd and 75th respectively - glad to see the marathon training is paying off for both of them! Thank you also for those who came to Bath but weren't able to run due to injury - your support was invaluable; definitely the loudest supporters thanks to a certain WHB and Clarkey!
We then, of course, dominated the after-party held in the Bath Student Union. With no theme other than drunkenness and general banter, we once again showed our skill at causing carnage at 'all-you-can-eat' Asian restaurants (ex Sports Presidents leading the way in this one!), at inter-club relations her selected Scottish Uni's (!), dancing, and using 'local knowledge' to find the best chips in Bath... without a doubt we excelled in every aspect of the weekend!
