Devil's Burdens Relays - 27-1-2007

Ascent of East Lomond

A elite team of hill runners nipped over to Lomond Hills in Fife for a bit of a day out. The Devil's Burdens Relays is a hill race with four legs (see below for further 4-legged action), with 1 and 3 run as pairs, covering a total of 31 km and over 1400 m of ascent. With the weather gods smiling, it was a great deal of fun!

Briony was running with HBT's Extemporaneous Effusion team and put in, for her, a cruising leg while dragging a man twice her size to the top of East Lomond and down the other side! Brilliant.

The Haries team started with David (who was doing his first hill race) and Rupert (who lost a shoe in the mud...) before handing over to Alistair (who made it to the change over before the leg 3 runners we ready...). Then Huw (who has been taking EPO...) and Duncan (who "navigated" them across a gully so steep they had to scramble up the other side) took over and put in a frankly awesome leg. Finally, Josh (who was also making his debut in the hills) brought us home in 20th place out of 101 teams to start. OFY.

Of course, we couldn't have done this without WHB and the banter bus (just sorry you couldn't have run!) as well as stolen lifts from Trotters. Also spirit-lifting was the sight of some runners taking their pets along for a spot of exercise: for instance a leg 3 pair was accompanied by a Yorkshire terrier, which by the end looked like it had been dipped in a puddle and dragged through a hedge.

Thanks to the drivers, those who ran and to Fife AC for organising a brilliant race. Finally, thanks must go to Rory's (of GUH&H) mum, who made an amazing pavlova that we won from the post-race raffle. Very much appreciated!
