Racing is what it’s all about for some of the club, others just treat it as a bit of fun. Most of the time we will travel to another part of Scotland, and occasionally the UK, to race, and they’re often a good excuse to have a post-race party as well. They are a great way to get to know club members, see the country, and have fun whilst representing your the University of Edinburgh. There is always a great atmosphere at races, especially if we break out the facepaint and some of our rousing chants. Importantly, any member is welcome to race for us, no matter their ability!
We host two main races during the year: the Braid Hills XC in November and KB5 in March. Braids, especially, is awesome. Additionally, there are the club championships, the Harie Handicaps series. Until February, the Club’s focus is cross-country; the main races we attend are the Scottish and British Universities championships (SUS and BUCS), and the Scottish Nationals. We also compete in the Scottish East District XC League.
After the XC season finishes, there is a wide variety of races: some will start hill racing (Carnethy 5, Ben Lomond, Dumyat) others will focus on the roads; whether the Marathon or on more sensible distances (Dunfermline Half, Jim Dingwall 10k) depends on individual taste! For those who like track, EUAC attend several events and some of the Haries will doubtless be along: we have the University’s 10,000m specialists as well as a crack 4x400m team!
